Derek our long suffering accountant clocked off for good as he retired this week after 19 years service (man and boy!) for Westmorland Hotels. He will be jetting off to join his wife Caroline in their Turkish apartment in the town of Cesme, to soak up the sun and generally take life easy.
Friends and colleagues gave him a wonderful Westmorland send off in his favorite Ambleside pub over a beer or two. Derek will be back in March for a visit to see how his protégé Diane is enjoying her new role - although Diane would prefer a long weekend in Cesme to iron out any queries she may have. Don't forget your bikini and calculator Di!
We also all wish Diane well in her new accountancy role.

Join the people of Ambleside as they parade through the town at dusk, with children carrying hundreds of paper lanterns.There's street entertainment, craft stalls even a cruise on the lake to bring Father Christmas and his helpers to Ambleside.
Traffic is halted as Father Christmas on his magical sleigh turns on all the festive lights in the town,To finish the day there's a fantastic firework display in Rothay Park - to light up the sky!

Although lots of you enjoyed the cinema outing last year, the old favourite boat trip was missed so it's back by popular demand.Prices are held from last year for the three day festive package arriving for afternoon tea on Christmas Eve.The rate is £432.00 per person to include dinner bed and breakfast, Christmas Day lunch, entertainment and of course the boat trip on Boxing Day.
If you'd rather spend Christmas at home but fancy a trip away for New Year our celebrations start on the 31st December for two nights. Arrive for afternoon tea, followed by a drinks reception and gala dinner in the Garden Restaurant, and then enjoy our fantastic firework display there's entertainment and dancing in to the early hours. New Year's day has a far more leisurely feel, a day to relax with dinner in the restarant in the evening. Our two night break is just £295 per person with some rooms still available.

Our congratulations go out to Stuart our long serving maintenence manager and his lovely partner Julie on the safe arrival of their beautiful baby girl Ellen Lilly.Ellen arrived on the 2nd October weighing in at 7lbs 5oz, Ruth informs us that this is the exact weight as William, her youngest who is now 3years old, I wonder if it has something to do with the water round here.
Our very best wishes to them all, we do hope Stuart has now got to grips with all the nappies.

He has arrived Westie our very own Westmorland Bear has made his debut appearance at the Salutation Hotel as you can see form the photo's he hasn't wasted any time getting settled in. He's been busy helping out Alison on reception, behind the bar ,keeping his eye on the reception desk and relaxing in the sun outside Oxley's after a hard day's work! He has his own Golden Key card so he can acess all areas .Watch this space to see where else he turns up. You can buy your very own Westie to take home with you and of course he will be opening our on line gift shop very soon. Just 'bear with us!''

It is with great sadness and regret that I must tell you that Derek Melville, our in-house accountant, and Joan Millray, my sectrary, are retiring and I am going part time(40 hours!!).
Because of this we have decided to sell the Grasmere Red Lion (sold 4th July 2008).
Paul, Sue and Alison will be running the Ambleside Salutation whilst I carry on with the building work (I never had a Meccano or Lego set as a child)
May I take this opportunity of thanking you for your support in the past and for the future.
