Fred Whitton Challenge
Mike & Jake Marshalling.
The Fred Whitton Challenge is one of the most popular sportives in the UK and is also famed as being particulary difficult, Riders rank it alongside European events such as the Marmotte in terms of difficulty.
The ride starts in and finishes in Grasmere and comes right past the hotels door step it then takes in the climbs of Kirkstone, Honistor, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose passes on its 112 – yes a 112 mile route! The ride is a real challenge and everyone who completes it has a true sense of achievement. The Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge is a charity event in honour of the late Fred Whitton who was a great advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire. It is with respect to Fred and his ideals that it remains just that ‘a real challenge’ with a ‘Good Effort’, Fred who died aged just 50 in 1998 was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.
This year we had guest’s staying who completed the race some with elite times the top riders will complete in just under 6 hours but 11 hours and over are not uncommon for the average sportive rider. This year Mike our Head Chef and jake who works in the kitchen we on hand to help Marshall the event which the totally enjoyed so much so that Jake is hoping to enter next year now hes seen it all first hand – Mike however is sticking to the wild swimming in Lake Windermere.
