Ambleside Park Walk
Easy – 2 miles
Turn right out of the hotel and then left into Compston Road at the traffic lights by The Climbers’ Shop.Continue along Compston Road until you see Zefferelli’s Cinema on the right. Turn right at the cinema, then immediately left following the finger post sign to Rothay Park along Vicarage Road.
After exploring Rothay Park, with its excellent childrens play area and ample viewpoints to the surrounding fells, go over a small bridge at the far end of the park then turn left over another small, stone bridge (known as a packhorse bridge).
Turn left again on to the tarmac road following this as it runs alongside the River Rothay. On reaching the T-junction at the end of this road carefully cross over the main road to go through a gap in the wall opposite and follow the path over the wooden bridge, through a gate and then right onto the road.
Walk along this road for approximately 10 minutes as it meanders along the valley towards the Lake Windermere until you round a final corner and see a sloped, walled path on your right leading into Borrans Park.
The park looks out across Lake Windermere with plenty of seats from which to enjoy the beautiful views. There is usually a wide variety of birds on the water including swans, geese, ducks, coots and black headed gulls. After lingering a while in the park take the ramped exit in the far corner and turn right, back onto the main road to bring you to the jetty at Waterhead with more ducks and swans to feed and even more glorious views to enjoy.
To return to the centre of the village, either re-trace your steps or walk back along the upper road. If you choose the latter, turn left at the traffic lights and keep walking until you see the Salutation Hotel ahead of you with its ever welcoming bar!
