Skelwith Bridge
5 miles
Start at Clappersgate heading over the River Brathay in the direction of Hawkshead following the road until you come to a narrow lane, join the footpath signposted Pull Wyke and continue adjacent to the road and cross over the stile. Here follow the path to a wooden footbridge, re-join the main road and go straight across another footpath, at the end of the footpath join the road again. Go down the stone steps, along a narrow path and cross the road again, go through the gate and over the stile into the field. Go down the footpath until you come to a track and join the lane.
Turn right and go down hamlet of Skelwith Fold |Fold passing a lane on the right and continuing ahead coming to a T-junction with another lane. Taking a right turn again follow the lane until you reach the corner of a sharp bend on the main Coniston/Ambleside road and cross over the river passing at the Skelwith Bridge hotel where you’ll come to a road junction.
Head left past a row of cottages located at the bottom of the lane and go up this lane for 1/3 of a mile to reach a T-junction with another lane. At this point you need to turn right for 50 yards then turn left onto a farm, after 40 yards bear right in front of Tarn Foot Farm. Proceed for 125 yards to reach a 4 way footpath junction, go straight across and pass through a large gate. Following the stone path and after 1/3 mile, pass through a gate across the route, continuing with the gradual upward walk and after 1/3 of a mile the wall on you right abruptly turns right. Continue on to aim for the brow of the ridge. Proceed a short distance to locate a narrow path on your right leading off along a wall side.
Go along this path and cross a small beck, continue along the path with the wall on your right. After 350 yards you will arrive at a five-way junction. Turn right and continue parallel to the wall, aiming for a wooden gate in a wire fence. Go through the gate and up the grassy slope, ignore the gap in the right hand wall and 175 yards further on follow the path as it bears left away from the wall to an X junction of paths. Turn right along the grassy paths towards Lake Windermere aiming for a wide gap in the wall.
Continue onwards, passing through a gap in the rocks. Follow path leading to a wide gap in the stonewall about 250 yards ahead: Lake Windemere provides a back drop through the wall. Go through the gap to some wooden handrails along the edge of a steep footpath.
Follow the footpath downhill, overlooking the Brathay valley, through a wooden gate set in a wall. Continue along the path, with stonewalls either side, this leads you back Clappersgate and back to the beginning of the walk.
