Start at the Post Office in the centre of Hawkshead With the Post Office on your right walk through the village and after 75 yards turn right onto a track, (signposted Latterbarrow-Claife Heights). At the end of the track cross the road onto another path (Public Footpath) After 30 yards bear right onto a narrow path which leads to a footbridge over Black Beck. Turn left then bear right across the field towards a gate in the fence.

Bear right across the next field to a swing gate. Turn left (Loanthwaite) and climb over the stile, continue along the path through a small gate to link up with a track. Turn left along the track , on reaching a lane turn right for 250 yards.

Just before Low Loanthwaite Farm turn left through a swing gate (Outgate) and bear right. Cross over the stile and bear right, on reaching a T-junction turn left and follow the path for 200 yards to locate a stile. Bear right, in the far right corner of the field pass through two gates. After the gates bear right again and cross the small meadow to join the Hawkshead/Ambleside road next to The Outgate Inn.

Turn right along the road and after passing some cottages on your left bear right onto the Public Bridleway. Continue along this track, through 3 gates to enter pastureland. Proceed straight ahead, following the left hand wall (Low Wray-Wray Castle) to reach a gate/stile. Cross the beck and continue through a wooded area to reach a gate. Go straight ahead (the path is somewhat indistinct) to locate a gate by the Ambleside/ Wray road.

Turn right along the lane, passing by the gatehouse to Wray Castle then the Old Vicarage on your left. After 75 yards turn right through a gate (Public Footpath), keep the hedge on your left, cross a footbridge at the bottom corner of the field. Bear left through the trees, continue on the left side of the field to a stile. Keep in the same direction to another stile and follow the path through two fields and a small farmyard to a lane. Turn right uphill for 100 yards(High Tock How) then bear right on a track towards Tock How Farm.

After 30yards turn left (Loanthwaite/Hawkshead) into a field. Follow the left hand wall for 50 yards then turn right. After 40 yards cross a stile next to a gate and turn left (High Loanthwaite) and follow the waymarkers along the track to another stile. Continue along the right hand hedge for 45 yards, after crossing the beck turn sharp left and follow the line of the beck aiming for a gate in the fence. Keep straight ahead to join a lane by High Loanthwaite Farm.

Turn left and after 100yard turn right into a field (Hawkshead). Follow the right hand hedge then turn right through a gate into the next field. Turn left and descend along the edge of two fields to a T-junction with a track. Turn left and after 50 yards turn right through a small gate. Retrace your route to the Post Office.
