Rydal Water Via The Coffin Trail Walk

6.4 miles

From The Hotel turn right along the road towards the Market Cross, where you can cross the road using the crossing. Head down the one way system in the opposite direction of the traffic past Boots the Chemist and on towards Zefferelis the Cinema, where you can again cross the main road. From the Cinema, cross the road, pass the fish & chip shop and head towards Millan’s Park and the Church following the small side road.

Once you are in the park keep on the main footpath through the park, which heads virtually straight from the main gates to the far side of the park by Rydal Beck, where you cross the beck via Miller Bridge. Over the Bridge you then join the Under Loughrigg ‘B’ road by turning right and heading over the cattle grid. Keep on this road which takes you on a gradual undulating, picturesque route alongside Rydal Beck for around 2-3 km. Cross the 3rd Cattle Grid.

Take the road to the sharp left and up the steep road for around 0.5km past the row of cottages on the left hand side, you will then come to a wooden gate which leads onto the rough track through the wood. Follow this track through the wood for a couple of hundred yards, you will then come to the next gate, through the gate take the left hand side path, which leads you away from the lake shore and up to Rydal Caves which will appear once you come out of the tree line, follow the path along past the caves and up onto the knoll overlooking Rydal water and surrounds. Now you have caught your breath, carry on down the path bearing left, where the path meanders for about 1km gradually descending to White Moss Woods.

You need to go straight across the path and through the gate into White Moss woods, following the path through the woods and down to the small Bridge which crosses the River . After crossing the bridge follow the footpath along to the right and up to the main A591 (Grasmere to Ambleside). Cross the road and take the right hand side path up through the wood, the path climbs quite steeply for around ¼ km , which then joins the path, which runs parallel with the side of Nab Scar, known as the ‘Coffin Trail’ take this path right and follow for a further 1-1.5km, you will need to pass through a further 3 wooden gates, after going through the 3rd gate you will run alongside ‘Rydal Mount’ which was ‘William Wordsworth home, on passing Rydal Mount take the road down to the right towards the Church.

Opposite the Church there is a large iron gate, go through the gate and follow the non-tarmac road towards the right over the beck. Go through the wooden gate, pausing for breath on the bridge to take in the lovely view of Rydal Beck and the waterfall. Once through the gate follow the rough track round to the right until you get to the second wooden gate which exits the grounds of Rydal Hall. Follow the rough track road which is a gradual climb back towards Ambleside. Keep on this track heading south for a further 1-2km through the fields ending at the gate house next to the A591 which heads back into Ambleside.

Cross the road to the footpath and follow the footpath for a further 1km until you arrive back into the centre of Ambleside and The Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa, where you can now treat yourself to a lovely Cappuccino and a bit of cake, because you deserve it… Well Done.
