Latterbarrow

3.5 Miles

Start with the Post Office on your right. Walk on for no more than 50 metres then turn right onto a wide track. The track will be sign posted for Latterbarrow – Claife Heights. Follow this track until the end then cross over the road and onto another track with a sign saying Public Footpath. Fork to the right after approx 15 metres where the narrow path leads to a footbridge across Black Beck. Cross over this beck then turn left, bearing right across the field. Head towards the gate in the boundary fence. Go through this gate and bear right in the direction of another gate that you will see approx 100metres away. Turn left following the sign for Loanthwaite.

Carry on for approx 50 metres and over the style. Continue along this path until you go through a small gate that leads you on to another path. Turn left then after no more than 25 metres turn right through a swing gate into a field. Walk along side the fence on your right in the direction of a large gate. Go into the next field and continue straight ahead.

After approx 150 metres turn right through another gate to enter the adjoining field. Turn left and you will come onto a lane. Turn right to follow the sign for Latterbarrow and continue along this lane until you come to a T-junction.

Turn left and continue for no more that 50 metres turn right and go through a gate with two sign posts (one for public footpath and one for NT Latterbarrow).

Proceed straight ahead until the path forks. Bear left and continue for approx 250 metres (very steep hill!) until you arrive at the tall pinnacle situated at the top of Latterbarrow. To come down from the summit, turn your back on the pinnacle and face Hawkshead village. Bear left and you will see a wide grass footpath about 10 metres away.

Follow this path until you see a style in a wire fence. DO NOT CROSS THIS STYLE but turn right and continue down the hill on the footpath until you rejoin the lane at the bottom. Turn left and pass by a narrow lane on your right (you will have already walked along this lane) continue straight on until you see a tarmacked track on your right.

Turn left down this track for a maximum of 50 metres then turn left down the path marked Public Footpath.

Go through a large gate to enter a field. Walk along the right hand side of this field by the hedge then turn right through the gap in the stonewall. Bear to the left following the way markers aiming for the stone style in the opposite corner of the field.

Climb over the stone style and down the path. This will lead you to a swing-gate. Go straight across the stony track and pass through another gate. This path will have a sign saying Public Footpath to Hawkshead Hall. Follow the narrow footpath for approx 100 metres until you arrive at a gate on your left. Go through this gate and you will be able to retrace your footsteps to return to the centre of Hawkshead.
